- Digital Realty and Rönesans Infrastructure have formed a joint venture to develop data centres in Türkiye, starting with a more than 22MW Ankara campus
- Land, power and permits are secured and early construction has begun, with the first Ankara facility scheduled for completion in 2028
The fact
Digital Realty and Rönesans Infrastructure have formed a joint venture to develop and operate data centres in Türkiye. The partnership's first project is a carrier-neutral campus in Ankara designed for more than 22MW of IT capacity.
Digital Realty said land, power and permits for the Ankara development are already secured and early construction has begun. The first facility is scheduled for completion in 2028. Rönesans is contributing local development and construction capabilities, while Digital Realty will bring its operating platform and customer relationships. The partners also intend to develop another data centre in Istanbul. No opening date, capacity or construction timetable has been disclosed for that project.
The assessment
The Ankara project has moved beyond an early site proposal because three basic development requirements — land, power and permitting — are already in place. The remaining work is to turn those secured inputs into an operating facility and connect it to the networks customers will actually use.
That makes the 2028 first-building date more useful than the broader two-city ambition. Carrier neutrality can give customers a choice of network providers, but that choice will depend on which carriers and interconnection services are present when the facility opens. Istanbul should also be treated separately until the partners publish a site, capacity and delivery timetable.
For BTW readers, Digital Realty's Turkish entry is therefore a construction and service-delivery story rather than a completed capacity addition. The first Ankara building, its network providers and its initial customer commitments will show when the joint venture becomes a usable infrastructure option.
What to watch
Watch for construction milestones at the Ankara campus, confirmed carrier and interconnection partners, and the first customer commitments ahead of the planned 2028 opening. A disclosed Istanbul site, capacity figure and construction timetable would show when the venture begins moving from one deliverable campus towards the two-city platform described by the partners.
