  • Expanded its Stuttgart presence with a 10,000 m² facility delivering up to 20 MW.
  • Fully powered by renewables and built to high efficiency and security standards.

What happened:STR001 opens—modular, green and compliant

AtlasEdge today launched its STR001 data centre in Stuttgart’s Böblingen district, marking phase one of a larger development. The 10,000 m² facility currently supports up to 20 MW of power and is built using modular design, which improves construction speed and resource use. The centre is fully powered by renewable energy, complying with Germany’s Energy Efficiency Act and certified to EN 50600 and ISO 27001 under the IT‑Grundschutz framework

AtlasEdge had previously secured planning permission for STR001 in early 2024, targeting low-latency coverage for Stuttgart’s automotive, research, and enterprise communities. This new site brings AtlasEdge’s total German footprint to eight, part of a broader European strategy launched in 2021 through the Liberty Global and DigitalBridge joint venture AtlasEdge.

Why it’s important

The opening of STR001 addresses mounting demand for sustainability-conscious data infrastructure in southern Germany. With its 100% renewable energy supply and energy-efficient modular build, AtlasEdge is helping to meet both enterprise needs and regulatory pressures. As AI, industrial IoT and cloud workloads surge, such tailored facilities close to manufacturing hubs like Stuttgart become indispensable.

However, scalability must be balanced with operational resilience. Modular centres may scale elegantly, but ensuring consistent energy supply and handling increasing rack densities requires vigilant management. Also, with sustainability credentials under scrutiny, AtlasEdge must maintain transparent reporting to avoid greenwashing concerns.

Looking ahead, regulatory and corporate clients will expect similar environmental assurances across Europe. AtlasEdge’s STR001 is a test case for deploying high-capacity, low-carbon data centres—but its success will depend on maintaining energy reliability, securing PPAs or similar agreements, and delivering robust local connectivity.
