Establishment and early development of University of Ghana

University of Ghana originated in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast, established pursuant to recommendations by the Asquith Commission, which advocated for University Colleges affiliated with the University of London in British colonies. Initially, the British Government opted for a single institution serving all of British West Africa, but after local advocacy led by Dr. J.B. Danquah, they consented to establish the Gold Coast’s own college. Founded by ordinance on August 11, 1948, the institution aimed to foster university education, learning, and research. Under the leadership of its first Principal, Mr. David Mowbray Balme, the college maintained high standards and promoted scholarly values.

An Inter-Universities Council was established to advise on higher education matters and ensure academic excellence. The University College operated under the University of London’s Special Relationship Scheme, enabling it to adapt London syllabuses to local contexts and participate in examination processes while maintaining stringent academic standards. In 1961, following a review by an International Commission, the institution gained autonomy, becoming the University of Ghana empowered to confer its own degrees, with Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as Chancellor and Nana Kobina Nketsia IV as the interim Vice-Chancellor.
