A Legacy of Educational Transformation
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has a remarkable history of transformation. Founded in September 1992 under PNDC Law 322, UEW was created to advance education in Ghana. A major milestone came in May 2004 with the passage of the University of Education Act (2004), which elevated the institution to full university status.
UEW’s foundation is unique. It brought together seven diploma-awarding colleges, including the Advanced Teacher Training College, Specialist Training College, and National Academy of Music in Winneba, the School of Ghana Languages in Ajumako, the College of Special Education in Akwapim-Mampong, the Advanced Technical Training College in Kumasi, and St. Andrews Agricultural Training College in Asante-Mampong. This consolidation created a diverse and dynamic educational institution capable of addressing the wide-ranging needs of teacher education in Ghana.
In 2020, the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development Act (Act 1026) further restructured UEW to respond to the changing landscape of higher education, ensuring the university remains adaptive and forward-thinking.

Commitment to Teacher Education and Community Engagement
At the heart of UEW’s mission lies a deep commitment to advancing teacher education. The university aims to nurture the next generation of educators, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and professionalism required to excel in diverse educational settings, from preschool to senior secondary school, and even in non-formal education institutions.
UEW not only educates but also fosters essential links between its schools and the broader community. The university believes in holistic training, where students not only gain knowledge within the classroom but also engage with and enrich the communities in which they live and work. This commitment to community engagement underscores the belief that education is a shared responsibility and that the positive impact of graduates extends far beyond the confines of the campus.
Embracing Innovation and Addressing Challenges
In keeping with its mission, UEW keeps embracing innovation to raise educational standards. The university has unveiled MyLOFT, a state-of-the-art off-campus access system intended to improve staff and student access to academic resources. Additionally, the renewal of the Turnitin subscription underscores UEW’s commitment to academic integrity and the avoidance of plagiarism.
Despite its achievements, UEW faces challenges common in the higher education sector, including the need for continuous curriculum updates to meet global standards, infrastructure development to accommodate a growing student population, and the integration of technology in teaching and learning. Addressing these challenges requires sustained investment, collaboration with industry partners, and a commitment to excellence in all facets of the university’s operations.
