The fact

Starcloud has raised $250m at a $2.3bn valuation as it develops data-centre infrastructure designed to operate in orbit. Manhattan West led the funding round, with Nvidia and Cisco Investments joining as new investors alongside existing backers including Benchmark, EQT and Soma. Starcloud was valued at $1.1bn when it raised $170m in March and has now raised $450m since it was founded in 2024.

The company says the latest capital will support manufacturing expansion, engineering work with Nvidia and procurement for newer products. It is building a 100,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Woodinville, Washington, for its next-generation Starcloud-3 spacecraft and is working with Nvidia on the Space-1 Vera Rubin Module for use in orbit.

Starcloud is targeting a constellation of 88,000 satellites providing 20GW of orbital compute capacity. That remains a long-term target rather than capacity already manufactured, launched or operating.

The assessment

The $250m gives Starcloud more money for the part of the project it controls directly: engineering and spacecraft production. The company now has to turn designs such as Starcloud-3 into flight-ready hardware that can be built beyond individual demonstration missions. Its Woodinville facility is important because it gives Starcloud more manufacturing capacity, but a larger factory and more funding do not themselves create orbital compute capacity.

Completed spacecraft still have to reach orbit and work as intended. That means Starcloud also needs launch capacity and successful missions before the hardware can become usable infrastructure. The company has not yet shown that it can manufacture and deploy spacecraft at anything close to the scale implied by its 20GW target, so that target should remain separate from what it can actually build and put into service.

For BTW readers, the next test is whether Starcloud can turn its new manufacturing resources into completed spacecraft that are launched and operate successfully. The funding makes it easier to prepare more hardware, but operating systems in orbit will show whether that investment is becoming real compute infrastructure.

What to watch

Watch whether Starcloud brings its Woodinville facility into production and completes its first Starcloud-3 spacecraft. Confirmed launch agreements and mission dates would show when that hardware could reach orbit. Progress on the Nvidia Space-1 work will also matter, but the clearest test will come after launch: whether Starcloud can put working compute hardware into orbit and operate it successfully.
