- Qualcomm has introduced the Dragonwing Q-2390 for commercial and consumer devices and the industrial-grade IQ-2390 for automation and edge systems
- Both processors combine application compute, on-device AI and real-time processing, with evaluation kits expected in early 2027
The fact
Qualcomm has launched two Dragonwing processors aimed at bringing on-device AI into a wider range of commercial and industrial equipment. The Q-2390 is designed for products including retail terminals, kiosks, access-control systems, smart appliances and home robots. It combines application processing, on-device AI, camera and display support and several connectivity options. A version with integrated LTE Cat 4 is also available.
The IQ-2390 is aimed at industrial systems including machine vision, controllers, gateways and building and energy equipment. It adds dual Gigabit Ethernet with Time-Sensitive Networking and is designed to operate between -30°C and 115°C. Both processors use a four-core CPU, an Adreno 704 GPU and an AI processor rated at 1.1 TOPS. Qualcomm said customer engagement has started through an early-access programme, with evaluation kits expected in early 2027.
The assessment
These chips are not trying to bring Qualcomm's most powerful edge AI into every device. They are aimed at equipment that needs enough local processing for tasks such as vision, automation or control, but where size, power use and cost still put limits on what can go inside the product.
What could make them useful is how much Qualcomm has packed onto one platform. A manufacturer can handle the main application, graphics, AI processing, cameras and real-time control without adding a separate component for every job. The IQ-2390 goes further for industrial equipment by adding networking features that can be used in factory and automation systems.
The trade-off is performance. At 1.1 TOPS, these processors are well below Qualcomm's higher-end Dragonwing hardware, so manufacturers will have to judge whether that is enough for the models and workloads they want to run locally. A compact design is not much help if it cannot keep up with the job.
For BTW readers, the useful evidence will come from the products built around these chips. If manufacturers can remove components, shrink their boards or cut power use while still getting the performance they need, Qualcomm will have a stronger case for Dragonwing in this part of the edge market.
What to watch
Watch the evaluation kits expected in early 2027 and the first named products built around the Q-2390 and IQ-2390. Production deployments in industrial controllers, gateways or commercial devices should show where the lower-end Dragonwing platform is useful and where manufacturers still need more powerful edge hardware.
