Summary
- ANGONIX is Angola's national internet exchange, operating since 16 March 2015 as a neutral platform run by Angola Cables and hosted at the AngoNAP Luanda data centre.
- The membership base grew from 17 members in July 2017 to 23 peers and 25 connections in March 2025, and the yearly maximum inbound and outbound figure reached 63 Gbps on 24 February 2026.
- Angola Cables operates more than 33,000 km of submarine cable, including SACS and MONET, and announced an expansion in October 2026 that carries services of up to 800 Gb/s.
- Those figures describe offered interconnection and exchanged traffic; they do not quantify how much Angolan traffic terminates inside the country.
A neutral platform in Luanda
ANGONIX describes itself as Angola's national internet exchange: a neutral platform where carriers, content providers and international networks exchange traffic to cut latency and to stop local traffic leaving the country and coming back. It is operated by Angola Cables and hosted at the AngoNAP Luanda data centre, and it offers both public and private interconnection (ANGONIX description, operator information).
The documented membership base
Interconnection records show 17 members in July 2017 and 23 peers with 25 connections in March 2025. The mix spans Angolan carriers and service providers — Unitel, ZAP, Africell, Angola Cables, Angola Telecom, Movicel and MS Telecom — national financial institutions including Banco Atlântico, Banco BAI and Banco Nacional de Angola, and international networks and content providers such as Meta, Microsoft, i3D.net, VeriSign Global Registry Services, Paratus Africa and CMC Networks; i3D.net was the exchange's first foreign peering customer in 2017 (membership data, peer record).
Traffic
On 24 February 2026 the yearly maximum inbound and outbound figure reached 63 Gbps, against 10.8 Gbps in July 2017; in March 2025 the route servers reported levels between 50 and 100 Gbps. These are figures the platform publishes itself rather than independent measurements: each one is tied to a date and to whoever released it (traffic statistics).
The cable layer beneath Angola's connectivity
The company that operates the exchange also operates the submarine layer. Angola Cables runs more than 33,000 km of cable, including the South Atlantic Cable System (SACS), which entered service on 26 September 2018 as the first cable to link Africa and South America directly, between Sangano in Angola and Fortaleza in Brazil, with an initial design capacity of 40 Tb/s across four fibre pairs, and MONET, which connects Brazil to the United States. SACS and MONET together provide a direct low-latency route between Angola and the United States of roughly 130 milliseconds round trip (SACS context, Fortaleza landing station).
In October 2026 Angola Cables announced a capacity expansion across the MONET and SACS networks using Ciena optical technology, carrying services of up to 800 Gb/s in response to demand from hyperscalers, cloud providers and artificial-intelligence applications on the routes linking the United States, Brazil and Angola (expansion announcement, background on the expansion).
The gap the figures leave open
The published figures describe two different things: cable capacity in the Atlantic, and interconnection ports in Luanda. A cable designed for 40 Tb/s reduces an Angolan carrier's latency only to the extent that the carrier exchanges traffic locally. The available evidence does not establish what share of Angolan traffic is resolved inside the country, nor the prices at which the exchange's ports are contracted; there is likewise no public data on specific peering agreements. This article therefore treats every figure as a dated statement by its publisher rather than an independently verified measurement.
The object's entry in the public directory is available at ANGONIX in the directory.
