The distance between the trench and the bill

KPN's third-quarter release offers three counts for the same fibre estate. At 30 September, its combined KPN, Glaspoort and optioned third-party footprint reached 6.025 million homes passed. Physical connections reached 4.813 million. Activated homes reached 2.860 million. The distance from the first number to the third is 3.165 million homes. It is a difference between company-defined stages, not a waiting list of three million buyers.

During Q3, the footprint grew by 59,000 homes, physical connections by 73,000 and activations by 26,000. More front doors were connected than new streets were passed, a useful sign that work continued on the existing footprint. But every new drop still needs an order and a live service before it becomes an activated line. A coverage milestone is a construction receipt; the activation count is closer to the commercial one.

The wholesale ledger gives the six-million celebration a sharper edge. KPN says its wholesale broadband base fell by 11,000 lines, reflecting competition and the migration of copper lines to Glaspoort. It also says fibre net additions strengthened and copper's remaining base became smaller, but supplies no separate fibre wholesale net-add figure in this release. Adjusted Wholesale service revenue rose 2.1% year on year; mobile drove that growth. Fibre service revenue rose 3.4%, broadband service revenue fell 3.9%, and mobile service revenue rose 16%.

The company can grow the wholesale top line while its broadband customer count contracts, because the revenue lines carry different services and prices.

The figures should sit beside each other, not be spliced into a false conversion rate. The 2.860 million activated homes cover the stated KPN/Glaspoort/optioned footprint. The 11,000 wholesale broadband loss is a change in a separate customer book. One does not explain the other by subtraction. The missing public figure is the net change in fibre wholesale lines, separately from copper; that would show how much of the legacy exit the new access platform is replacing.

KPN already owns the attractive headline. Six million homes passed reads like a finished market. The harder trade is between paying to connect another front door and winning a recurring line on it. Q3 put 73,000 more doors on the connected side of the ledger and only 26,000 more on the activated side. That is the market number worth following after the ribbon-cutting.
