Summary
- At ARIN 58 on 22 October 2026, election officer Ron da Silva congratulated Kat Hunter as the Board’s appointee to the region’s NRO Number Council seat. The new term begins on 1 January 2027.
- Hunter was still chairing ARIN’s elected, 15-member Advisory Council at the meeting. Participants asked how that body would handle the vacancy due in January; the public recap recorded the question, not a completed replacement.
Kat Hunter’s job has long involved fitting address space to actual networks. ARIN’s biography says she manages number resources for Comcast’s voice, video and data services, recycles IPv4 addresses while IPv6 rolls out, and has worked in the ARIN community since 2004. It is the sort of work where a neat policy sentence eventually has to survive a messy inventory. Her 2024 voter-guide account adds that she has shepherded and written policy, helped new council members settle in, and coordinated the council’s monthly work.
Hunter was elected to ARIN’s Advisory Council in 2018, reelected in 2021 and 2024, served as vice chair from 2021 through 2023 and became chair in 2024. The council has 15 elected members. It tests proposals against community input, forwards consensus recommendations and leaves ratification to ARIN’s Board. Her chair’s gavel is therefore a traffic signal for proposals, not a private pen for writing everybody else’s rules.
In September, ARIN’s published candidate slate placed Hunter alongside Kate Gerry and Adair Thaxton for a different seat. The Board, rather than the general-member ballot, would appoint one of the three to the ARIN region’s NRO Number Council place. All new terms start on 1 January 2027. At ARIN 58, Ron da Silva congratulated Hunter on the Board appointment. She also delivered the Advisory Council’s report that day: four new proposals since ARIN 57, nine policies on the meeting docket, and work distributed across three council groups.
The same meeting supplied the awkward little footnote. During the open microphone, people asked how the Advisory Council would handle a vacancy in January 2027. A policy body can lose a member and keep a process, but somebody must still do the calendar, shepherding and judgment calls. The question was recorded in public before a replacement plan was announced there.
Hunter is moving from an elected regional policy council to a Board-appointed seat in a global coordination body. The incumbent NRO councillor, Kevin Blumberg, reported separately on the current ICP-2 review at ARIN 58; those were his updates. Hunter’s appointment tells us who is entering the room next year. Her old council’s open chair asks whether the regional machinery that prepared her can manage its own handoff just as neatly as it asks operators to manage theirs.
