Internet Society Asia Limited: Building Local Capacity

Internet Society Asia Limited is established in 2011 and headquartered in Singapore. The Asia-Pacific arm of the global non-profit Internet Society, is spearheading efforts to expand affordable and resilient Internet infrastructure across the region. The organisation plays a pivotal role in advancing the Internet Society’s mission to ensure the Internet remains open, globally connected, secure, and trustworthy for everyone.

At the Pacific Telecommunications Council (PTC) 2025 conference, Internet Society President and CEO Sally Wentworth highlighted the organisation’s commitment to community-driven connectivity. She emphasised the importance of local engagement in developing sustainable Internet access.

In the past five years, the Internet Society has facilitated the creation of over 85 community networks and 64 Internet exchange points (IXPs), trained more than 15,000 individuals in digital skills, and supported technical communities in over 45 locations. These initiatives empower local populations to build and maintain their Internet infrastructure, ensuring long-term resilience and accessibility.

A good example is the Maldives Internet Exchange (MVIX), set up in 2022. Before MVIX, most local Internet traffic had to travel overseas, which made it slower and more expensive. With MVIX, approximately 70% of locally popular content is now accessed within the country, enhancing both affordability and reliability.

Internet Society Asia Limited: Addressing Industry Challenges Through Collaboration Internet Society

The Asia-Pacific region faces significant challenges in Internet accessibility. According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), 2.6 billion people worldwide remain unconnected, mobile Internet is 14 times more expensive in Africa than in Europe, and the digital gender gap is widening in least developed countries.

To help solve these problems, Internet Society Asia Limited works with groups like APNIC, APIX, and the APNIC Foundation to build not-for-profit Internet exchange points (IXPs). These partnerships aim to close the digital gap, make Internet connections stronger and more reliable, and give communities in the Asia-Pacific region the skills and tools to manage their own Internet access.
