A new date in the chair’s notice

The 2026–2027 IETF Nominating Committee is seeking nominees for positions on the IESG, IAB, IETF Trust and IETF Administration LLC Board. In a notice dated 15 October, chair Mankamana Mishra said that relatively few nominees had accepted their nominations for a number of positions as the nomination period closed. He extended the acceptance deadline by two weeks, to 23 October 2026, and said the committee would finalise its nominee list that day, anywhere on earth.

The notice singled out the Applications and Real-Time (ART) and Web and Internet Transport (WIT) areas as needing candidates willing to accept nominations. It also said the committee hoped to broaden and strengthen the pool for all open positions. The message gives no number of accepted nominations by role and offers no explanation for the chair’s description of the pool as relatively small.

The homepage keeps the earlier milestones

The NomCom’s 2026 home page, retrieved on 17 October, still listed 13 October as the acceptance deadline and 14 October for finalising slates and opening community feedback. Its work-phase timeline continued to show virtual interviews beginning on 20 October. Those are the dates displayed on the page; they do not establish that interviews have begun or that the committee has stopped its work.

The 15 October announcement and the IETF announcement-list copy therefore give different public acceptance dates. The newer notice specifies 23 October and a same-day nominee-list deadline, while the central schedule retains milestones that precede both dates. Neither record explains which later milestones, if any, will move.

What the mismatch does—and does not—show

The extension changes the time available to submit a nomination and obtain a nominee’s acceptance. It does not select anyone. Under the process described by the committee, acceptance is an entry condition for consideration; the NomCom still evaluates candidates and makes selections for the relevant confirming bodies. More time to accept is not evidence that the resulting pool is representative, nor does the chair’s unquantified description establish the scale or cause of the shortfall.

The evidence at the 17 October cutoff is a public-record mismatch, not proof of an operational failure. A current schedule should make clear whether 20 October interviews will proceed alongside the extended intake, whether feedback dates remain in force and which page governs. The sources reviewed do not answer those questions.
