Alphabet Inc.’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, has revealed strategic changes to Google’s workplace team structure aimed at accelerating the development of artificial intelligence products and services. In a recent communication to employees, Pichai announced the consolidation of models, research, and responsible AI teams under Google DeepMind, the company’s premier artificial intelligence division.

Consolidation of AI teams and computing power

To expedite work on Google’s AI models, Gemini and Gemma, employees from Google Research and Google DeepMind will merge into a unified team. This consolidation aims to streamline efforts and consolidate the expensive computing power required for training AI systems under one division of the company.

Additionally, responsible AI teams across the business will be relocated under Google DeepMind to align efforts and resources for more efficient AI development.

Formation of the nnified platform and devices team

Google is establishing a new Unified Platform and Devices team to integrate hardware, software, and AI efforts across the company. This team will focus on products like Android, Chrome, search, and photos, emphasising computational photography and on-device AI features.

Notably, it will include employees who worked on the recent “circle to search” AI tool developed in collaboration with Samsung Electronics Co. These efforts are geared towards driving integrated product development and enhancing collaboration among different teams.

Focus on AI tools and services

Google’s recent reorganisation is aimed at sharpening the focus on launching AI tools and services. The company has intensified its work on generative AI to keep pace with competitors like Microsoft Corp. and OpenAI.
