Summary
- Eastlink says a Nokia 5G standalone core transformation is complete, but it does not say which sites, plans or devices currently carry customer traffic over it.
- The company’s C$12 million commitment and 180 sites in progress concern further modernization; they cannot be treated as a measure of 5G SA coverage or performance.
A mobile network is not a single upgrade. The core handles functions such as subscriber authentication, session management and routing. The radio access network connects a handset to a nearby cell. A customer reaches a 5G standalone service only when the access, core, device, subscription and service configuration work together. The GSMA describes SA as 5G standards and protocols in both the radio network and the controller core. A completed core is a meaningful architecture step; it is not, on its own, an end-to-end service footprint.
Eastlink’s 14 October release says it has completed a “multi-million dollar” mobile-core transformation using Nokia 5G Standalone Core Technology. It gives no exact cost for that project, cutover date, customer eligibility rules or list of enabled locations. The release also says Eastlink will spend another C$12 million on modernization, including new sites across Atlantic Canada. The company reports more than C$600 million invested in its mobile service since launch, over 1,200 sites and 180 additional sites in progress.
Those site totals combine towers, colocations, rooftop and in-building sites, and small cells; they do not say how many have 5G radios, connect to the new core or carry SA traffic.
That distinction matters because the company describes work at two different layers in the same announcement. Radio sites are still being added while the core milestone is called complete. The release does not explain whether “complete” means installation, technical acceptance, live traffic, or commercial availability. Nor does it link a site list to compatible devices, plans, or a measured service area. The public coverage page lists separate 5G, future, Eastlink and extended-coverage layers and links a KMZ named for 1 August 2023. That page is not an SA availability register.
Eastlink’s network history makes the integration question material without answering it. Its 2022 5G launch named Ericsson and began with 18 Halifax sites. In 2023, Eastlink and Nokia announced AirScale radio expansion and upgrades, with Eastlink describing Nokia as part of a “dual supplier” RAN strategy. These are historical announcements, not evidence of today’s vendor allocation or the path from each radio site into the newly completed core. The 2026 release provides no current site-by-site architecture.
The missing evidence is practical and finite: the date customer traffic began using the SA core; the markets and sites enabled; whether compatible 5G devices and plans are required; which 5G SA features are live; and representative measurements before and after the change. If the core is ready but radio or commercial activation is still staged, Eastlink can report that sequence. If service is already available, it can publish the eligible footprint and the conditions for access. Either would separate a supplier milestone from what a customer can actually buy and use.
Eastlink says its long investment programme is delivering faster, more reliable connectivity, fewer dropped calls and broader coverage. Those are company claims, not results demonstrated in the release. The next useful milestone is therefore not another cumulative spending figure. It is an auditable link from core completion, through named radio sites and service eligibility, to observed performance.
