• NTT DATA expanded AI-supported IT operations for Daimler Truck on 8 September, covering cloud, SAP Basis, networks and infrastructure
  • The service monitors tens of thousands of devices, but no measured downtime or recovery gains were disclosed

The fact

NTT DATA said on 8 September that it had expanded an AI-supported infrastructure operations service for Daimler Truck. The deployment covers the manufacturer’s global IT infrastructure, including cloud environments, networks and SAP Basis, the technical administration layer supporting SAP systems.

The platform combines real-time monitoring, predictive analytics and automated stages of incident handling. Computer Weekly reported that it monitors tens of thousands of devices and gives operations teams a common view across multiple sites. The service also covers hardware lifecycle work, including the planning and coordination of equipment replacements.

NTT DATA said the delivery model combines on-site expertise with offshore operations. The company lists faster responses, less manual work and improved reliability among the aims of the project, but it has not published measured changes in Daimler Truck’s downtime, incident duration or production output.

The assessment

The weak point in a global operations model is often the handover, not the alert. Remote teams can identify problems across many sites, but they may still depend on local staff to approve access, schedule downtime or physically replace equipment. If those steps are slow, better monitoring does not necessarily produce a faster resolution.

Planned maintenance faces much the same constraint. A system may flag equipment that needs attention, yet the work still has to fit around local operating conditions and maintenance windows. Daimler Truck therefore needs clear boundaries between the teams watching infrastructure remotely and the people responsible for changes at each site. Automation can help identify what needs attention without deciding who is allowed to make the change.

For BTW readers, the evidence to look for comes after an alert is raised. Shorter delays between detection, authorisation and completed work would show that the operating model is improving coordination. NTT DATA has not published those results, so the size of any improvement remains unknown.

What to Watch

Watch for operating data from Daimler Truck or NTT DATA showing how long incidents take to move from detection to resolution. Hardware replacements completed within planned maintenance windows would also indicate whether the global model is reducing delays between remote operations teams and local sites.
