CNCF and SlashData have published China-focused findings showing that 48% of Chinese backend developers are now classified as cloud native, up from 30% two years earlier. The global comparison is 52%. The estimate comes from the China subset of SlashData's Q1 2026 global survey, which covered more than 12,500 developers across 100 countries. The release does not state the size of the Chinese sample.

The report also estimates that China has about 1.75 million cloud-native developers, including roughly 400,000 working with AI. CNCF's wider research describes developers increasingly using internal platforms operated by specialist teams and distinguishes AI experimentation from production use, where traffic management and resilience testing add further operating requirements. Its cloud-native classification covers infrastructure practices across public, private and hybrid environments, rather than simply the use of public cloud services.

The assessment

The 48% figure shows that cloud-native development has become much more common among Chinese backend developers. It does not show how well individual applications are operated once they reach production. As more infrastructure is handled through shared internal platforms, application developers may see less of the network, monitoring and recovery systems underneath their services.

That hand-off matters when an AI application moves from a trial to something users depend on. The application team can continue working through the same platform, but responsibility for traffic, changes, failures and recovery still has to sit somewhere. A standard platform can reduce work for developers, but it does not remove those operating duties.
