What happened: AirTrunk raises green financing to support regional data centre build-out

AirTrunk, a leading hyperscale data centre operator across the Asia-Pacific and Japan region, has closed a landmark A$16 billion sustainability-linked refinancing—the largest of its kind in the area. The refinancing spans four separate transactions covering both greenfield and operational sites across Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. Supported by a syndicate of over 60 banks and financial institutions, the deal brings AirTrunk’s total finance platform to more than A$18 billion, including Japan.

The package includes a S$2.25 billion green loan for the upcoming Loyang SGP2 site and a major loan backed by AirTrunk’s Melbourne data centre. The loan in Melbourne stands out as the largest green loan in the region and the first globally tied to a social impact programme. The financing incorporates sustainability KPIs covering energy and water efficiency, renewable energy adoption and gender pay equity.

Why it’s important

This refinancing enables AirTrunk to scale its digital infrastructure sustainably across Asia Pacific. By tying financing to environmental and social performance, the company aligns financial incentives with ESG outcomes. The green loan for its Singapore facility is the largest such deal for a data centre in the city-state.

The Melbourne structure also sets a global benchmark by linking loan margins to social impact efforts. These measures underpin AirTrunk’s commitment to net-zero ambitions and responsible growth, bridging data demand with environmental accountability. The financing underscores how data centre operators can use green finance to accelerate infrastructure development while advancing broader sustainability objectives.
