Zayo is expanding its fibre network infrastructure to support the growth of AI-driven data centres and cloud services. This move underscores the critical role of high-capacity connectivity in enabling efficient data transfer for AI workloads, highlighting Zayo's strategic importance in the digital infrastructure landscape.

  • As of 14 July 2026, Zayo says 8,000 route miles of new builds and overbuilds are supported by an anchor customer, while its broader projects under way or commencing exceed 15,000 route miles.
  • The completed Crown Castle Fiber Solutions acquisition added about 90,000 existing route miles; it did not build 90,000 new miles of fibre.

Three different ledgers

Operating network, construction and acquired assets belong in separate columns. In November 2025, Zayo announced completion of the 622-mile Umatilla–Prineville–Reno corridor, built with multiple conduits and 13 intermediate line-amplifier sites. The company describes it as an inland alternative to the I-5 corridor. Completion is a construction status reported by Zayo; it does not prove a named customer is using every fibre pair or that identical service is available at every point.

Zayo also said in July 2025 that its North American core was fully 400G enabled. That describes core technology, not a promise of 400G service in every building or data centre. Delivery still depends on ports, optical equipment, local fibre, building entrances, cross-connects and customer turn-up. Nokia said in October 2025 that a new IP architecture was then being deployed in New York and New Jersey, with expansion to other markets planned rather than completed.

What is actually being built

The January 2025 plan covered more than 5,000 new long-haul route miles over five years—through 2030—plus overbuilds on seven existing corridors. By July 2025, Zayo said it had broken ground on three initial routes: Chicago–Columbus, 385 miles; Chicago–Minneapolis, 521 miles; and Phoenix–Tucson, 123 miles. Breaking ground is not completion or commercial availability.

The 16 April 2026 release expanded the programme. Zayo says it is actively building 8,000 route miles backed by an agreement with an unnamed global AI-infrastructure partner: six new routes totalling 3,000 miles and ten overbuilds covering more than 5,000 miles. It also says its wider build and overbuild projects under way span more than 15,000 route miles and about 20 million fibre miles. The release says construction is under way or commencing on many routes, but gives no route-by-route ready-for-service dates or public volume, price, term or delivery obligation for the anchor contract.

The units are not interchangeable

A route mile measures geographic path length. A fibre mile multiplies that path by the number of fibres. An overbuild can add ducts or strands on an existing corridor without creating a new geographic path. Dark-fibre length is not lit capacity, and a 400G core does not put a 400G service at every endpoint. Likewise, a data centre can be described as within reach, connected, on-net or an active customer; those are different service states.

Acquisition and capital

On 1 May 2026, Crown Castle confirmed the sale had closed. Zayo’s Fiber Solutions part was valued at about $4.25 billion. Zayo says it added approximately 90,000 metro and regional route miles and 40,000 on-net enterprise locations, taking the North American network to 224,000 route miles. These are mainly acquired operating assets subject to integration, not output from the organic 8,000- or 15,000-mile programme.

As a private company, Zayo did not disclose a complete route-by-route construction budget in these releases. Its April 2026 $2.37 billion asset-backed note issuance was primarily to repay existing debt and support continued network investment; it is not a $2.37 billion new-route budget. The FCC transfer approval confirms the service businesses and general customer groups, not completion of individual builds.

Signed demand, pipeline and forecast

In January 2025, Zayo said it had more than $1 billion of AI-related deals in 2024 and another $3 billion in pipeline. Pipeline is neither a signed contract nor recognised revenue. In April 2026, the company announced a specific agreement with an unnamed anchor customer; that is stronger evidence of commitment, but identity, price, term, reserved capacity and delivery obligations remain undisclosed. The forecast that AI bandwidth or US data-centre capacity could grow two to six times by 2030 is a Zayo and market-research projection, not achieved demand.

Diversity and bottlenecks

A second fibre is diverse only if the physical path avoids the same duct, bridge, building entrance, amplifier site, power source and critical suppliers. Umatilla–Reno may provide an alternative to I-5, but each customer order still needs a verified route and shared-risk analysis. Builds depend on rights of way, permits and environmental review, cable and equipment supply, civil construction, splicing, testing, power for amplifier sites, data-centre cross-connects and metro access. The NTIA project record illustrates that scope can change during delivery.

Data-centre geography also depends on available electric power and grid interconnection. The US Department of Energy documents rapidly rising data-centre load. A fibre route can therefore finish before the facility, power or interconnect is ready—and the reverse. The next evidence points are route-level ready-for-service dates, capacity contracted and delivered, anchor-customer terms, permits, equipment lead times and Crown Castle integration.
