- AFC and Vision Invest have agreed to invest a combined $300m in WIOCC Group
- WIOCC plans to use the capital for data centres, terrestrial fibre and subsea assets across Africa
The fact
WIOCC Group said on 1 September that it had signed a shareholder subscription agreement with Africa Finance Corporation and Vision International Investment Company, known as Vision Invest, under which the two investors will make a combined US$300 million investment. The agreement was signed at the LEAP 2026 Global Technology exhibition in Riyadh.
WIOCC said the capital will support data-centre deployment and consolidation, expansion of its open-access terrestrial fibre footprint and investment in new subsea assets. The company has not said how the US$300 million will be divided between those areas. It has also not disclosed how much each investor will contribute, the ownership stakes resulting from the transaction or a list of projects and delivery dates tied to the investment.
The assessment
WIOCC has said the $300 million will support data-centre deployment and consolidation, terrestrial fibre expansion, and new subsea assets. It has not said how the money will be divided between those areas or which projects will receive it first.
That makes it too early to translate the headline figure into new capacity. There are no disclosed route kilometres, data-centre megawatts, subsea systems or project timetables attached to the investment yet. Those details will determine what the funding actually changes on the ground.
For BTW readers, the next useful evidence will be project-level announcements. Named fibre routes, data-centre projects or subsea investments, together with budgets and delivery dates, would show how the $300 million is being used. Until then, the announcement confirms new group-level investment, but not the amount or timing of infrastructure that will result from it.
What to watch
Watch which projects WIOCC names first, how the US$300 million is divided between data centres, terrestrial fibre and subsea assets, and when those projects enter construction or service. New route kilometres, commissioned data-centre capacity, acquisitions and named subsea investments will show how quickly the funding becomes operating infrastructure.
