Summary
- Unity’s current editor terms use a client’s gross revenue or funding as the financial measure for a provider of services to third parties. A small project invoice is a different number.
- A quote needs the appropriate tier, authorised users and actual use rights. The advertised price of a Pro seat does not price every contracting arrangement.
A small job can have a large client. Unity remembers the large client. For a developer providing services to a third party, its editor terms look to the customer’s gross revenue or funding when determining tier eligibility. The contractor is counting working days. The software is consulting somebody else’s finances.
That is a practical problem for quoting. The developer can estimate the work and specify the deliverable. The information that may determine the tool’s licensing conditions sits with another company. Fix the price before obtaining it and the procurement work can arrive after the delivery promise.
Whose money reaches the threshold?
The editor terms, last updated on 30 June 2026, distinguish roles. A legal entity making its own content is measured on aggregate gross revenues and funding. If it provides services to third parties, the stated measure is its customers’ or clients’ gross revenues or funding. An individual providing services encounters the same customer-side test.
An individual working on their own projects is measured on amounts generated in connection with using the software; unrelated work does not simply enter the total. Governmental, nonprofit, educational and academic institutions have a different measure: the budget of the whole institution. Asking what the developer earns skips the question of which role the developer occupies.
Unity repeats the client-based measure in its licensing guide. Personal permits Total Finances of no more than $200,000 over the preceding twelve months. Above the threshold, Personal is unavailable even for internal projects or prototyping. The current terms measure eligibility on each date of use over the most recent twelve trailing months.
An ongoing project does not freeze those inputs. Funding or changes in revenue can change the relevant financial position. Taking on a new customer also gives a reason to check the basis again. Calling the deliverable a prototype can make the work smaller; it does not shrink the client.
Pro has a price. The job has an arrangement.
Unity states a Pro range of $200,001 to $24,999,999 and requires Enterprise at $25 million and above. Industry customers, whose use is not solely games or entertainment, have a separate $1 million threshold and Unity Industry requirements. Role, purpose and relevant finances come before selecting the product and rights.
Its 2026 pricing page lists Pro at $2,310 per seat per year, prepaid yearly, or $210 per month paid monthly. Regional taxes, currency and rounding can alter the final amount. These are advertised prices for a particular tier. The actual users and commercial offering still determine what a real service engagement requires.
There is a second question in the editor terms: permission. The basic rights grant is primarily for creators making their own content. Service providers and agencies may need a separate grant of rights or written authorisation. A useful quotation identifies who can use the editor, for whom and in what arrangement, as well as putting a price against it.
The general terms also distinguish acting for an entity from acting as an individual. They name UNITY TECHNOLOGIES SF as the default contracting party unless an offering or commercial terms provide otherwise. The purchase needs to match the actual working relationship. A product name is a rather short description of that transaction.
One side has the data. The other writes the quote.
A customer may choose the technical environment and hold the financial information. A contractor may promise a fixed price based on hours and delivery. If licensing enters the discussion afterwards, someone still has to gather the facts, allocate costs and perhaps reorganise the work. Leaving those tasks off the first quote does not remove them from the economics.
Before fixing a price, the parties can establish the financial scope, authorised users, required rights and who will arrange and fund them. The licensing guide calls for an appropriate licence for each user. The editor terms also restrict simultaneous mixing of tiers with different financial thresholds within the relevant entities, organisations and projects. Passing a password around does not perform that procurement.
Pricing a particular engagement requires its relevant client finances, actual authorisation, users and commercial quotation. Those inputs let the contractor compare the money coming in with the tools needed to deliver the work.
Unity offers an editor with which small teams can get started. In the services market, their entry conditions also depend on whom they work for. The job can stay small. Its quotation should meet the large client before anybody signs.
