The fact
The US Space Force's Space Systems Command has awarded five companies complementary contract packages worth $12m each, or $60m in total, for Space Data Network integration work. The recipients are Amazon LEO for Government, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Rocket Lab and York Space Systems.
Each package includes a $10m fixed-price contract, running for six to nine months, to demonstrate ground-to-space and space-to-space data transport between vendor systems and the SDN Backbone. A separate $2m Other Transaction Authority agreement, with a six-month period of performance, will support development and fielding of Space Exchange Point satellites that act as orbital routers between different networks and the backbone.
The work is for integration and demonstration rather than deployment of a complete multi-vendor network. The SDN Backbone is a separate programme for which SpaceX received a $2.29bn award in May, with an operational prototype due by the end of 2027.
The assessment
The awards are not funding five alternatives to the Space Data Network backbone. They are testing whether spacecraft and communications systems from different suppliers can connect to that backbone through a common set of physical, electrical and data interfaces. The change is in how a new provider would be added: the Space Force wants vendors to meet a shared integration baseline instead of engineering a new connection for every spacecraft or network.
The Space Exchange Point work takes the same idea into orbit. These satellites are intended to route traffic between otherwise separate networks, but the current awards only seed their development. The first demonstrations still have to show that independently built systems can exchange data across the backbone using the proposed standards. For BTW readers, an open architecture becomes operationally useful when a new provider can join without a bespoke integration programme. The next six to nine months will show whether the interface baseline can deliver that in practice.
What to watch
Watch the six-to-nine-month demonstrations for live ground-to-space and space-to-space data transfer between vendor systems and the SDN Backbone. The $2m Space Exchange Point work should also show whether orbital-router prototypes move towards flight. Follow-on procurement will clarify whether new providers can join through the common interface standards or still require substantial vendor-specific integration.
