  • TikTok is facing scrutiny in the United States, Europe, and other regions because of the concerns over the safety and security of the platform

TikTok’s global trust and safety unit undergoes leadership changes as Cormac Keenan transitions from leading the team to a strategic advisory role, with Adam Presser taking over. In parallel, two senior leaders in Europe, Theo Bertram and Rich Waterworth, are departing for new opportunities. These changes come amid ongoing scrutiny of TikTok’s platform safety, with CEO Shou Chew addressing concerns and testifying before a US Senate subcommittee.

Internal Changes

CEO Shou Chew announced internal leadership changes at TikTok on Tuesday. Cormac Keenan, who has been based in Dublin since 2020, will transition into a strategic advisory role, collaborating with the company’s senior leadership team, and he will also serve on the board of the company’s Irish entity. Simultaneously, TikTok’s global trust and safety unit will now be led by Adam Presser, the Chief Operating Officer based in Los Angeles.

Chew expressed gratitude to Cormac, acknowledging his crucial contributions in making TikTok a safe space for creativity and expression.

On the same day, Chew also revealed the departure of two senior leaders in Europe: Theo Bertram, former Vice President of Government Relations and Public Policy in Europe, and Rich Waterworth, General Manager of Operations overseeing content efforts in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Under Scrutiny

TikTok continues to face scrutiny in the United States, Europe, and other regions concerning the safety and security of its platform.

Chew testified before a US Senate subcommittee last month with leaders from other major social media companies, coping with concerns related to youth safety. During his tenure, the introduction of numerous new features and policies effectively addressed issues surrounding the safety of young users. Chew stated during the hearing that TikTok plans to invest $2 billion in trust and safety efforts in 2024.
