Network infrastructure and purpose

KT Rwanda Networks Ltd (KTRN) operates as Rwanda’s wholesale 4G LTE infrastructure provider. It was established in 2013 through a public–private partnership between the Rwandan government and Korea Telecom. KTRN delivered its first commercial services in late 2014. Since then, it has expanded its network to provide more than 98% population coverage—making its 4G network the most widespread in the country. Alongside wireless services, KTRN has developed the largest fibre-optic backbone in Rwanda, extending over 4,000 km to connect all districts and border areas. This fibre network is equipped with redundant transmission and power systems to ensure high resilience.

KTRN provides wholesale connectivity to other mobile and internet service providers. It positions itself as the only operator capable of integrating both fixed and wireless technologies at scale. The company aligns with national digital aims to establish Rwanda as a regional ICT hub. Through its infrastructure, KTRN enables other operators to deliver retail services while supporting Rwanda’s ambition for inclusive broadband access.

Strategic role and innovations

KTRN supports Rwanda’s broader ICT and innovation ecosystem. It powers e-government platforms and facilitates digital inclusion across sectors like education, banking, justice, and healthcare. KTRN also sponsors tech-led initiatives, such as being the lead technology partner for national innovation events. Its infrastructure underpins both public and private digital services and enables Internet of Things (IoT) deployments across Rwanda.

KTRN continues to upgrade its network and explore emerging technologies like 5G, with trial sites already under deployment. It has enhanced its roaming and traffic clearing capabilities through partnership with global clearing provider Syniverse. These enhancements support KTRN’s expansion as they facilitate international voice and data roaming. The company remains at the core of Rwanda’s mission to grow an internet-driven economy, offering scalable, high-quality wholesale connectivity to backup regional digital growth.
