- ICANN’s 21 October final determination says the operation of
.helsinkiwill have no successor registry when City of Helsinki ends its agreement. - The city gave notice on 28 May. ICANN received no comments during the 30-day window and says the registry agreement will end no later than 24 November.
A city can put a dot on the internet and later decide it has had enough of being a registry. City of Helsinki gave notice on 28 May that it intended to terminate its .helsinki agreement with ICANN. The agreement, signed in February 2015, gives an operator a 180-day notice route to voluntary termination. The city held that lever; ICANN held the next one.
The next question was who, if anyone, should run the top-level domain afterward. ICANN’s final determination of 21 October says it consulted the city and decided against a successor operator. Its August preliminary finding relied on two points: .helsinki has an effective Code of Conduct Exemption, and moving the TLD to another registry was unnecessary to protect the public interest.
ICANN opened that preliminary view to comments through 18 September. None arrived during the 30-day period, according to the final notice. The document says ICANN will terminate the registry agreement by 24 November. That is the next contractual milestone for the city’s dot.
ICANN’s termination tracker describes the later implementation steps separately, including root-zone delegation revocation where a TLD has no successor. The tracker still labels the .helsinki row “Comment Period” while linking the dated final notice. The signed notice carries the decision; the status cell is still catching up. A domain with a city on the label can leave a surprisingly bureaucratic paper trail.
