Summary
- RIPE NCC says its database query page now lets users view and compare old versions of selected objects.
- RIPE's history rules limit the view to an object's most recent creation, filter email fields and exclude person and role histories.
The registry has acquired a useful split screen. In its October member update, RIPE NCC says users can view and compare previous versions of selected RIPE Database objects on the query page. A changed resource record no longer has to be a small archaeological expedition for someone who wants to know which line moved.
The old layers existed before this interface. RIPE's historical-data guide says it saves the previous version whenever an object is updated. The October change puts comparison in a more accessible place. That matters to the operator reviewing a changed contact, the holder checking a resource registration, and the reporter trying to establish when a claim entered the public record. A side-by-side difference gives each of them a starting point they can point to.
Then comes the tear in the paper. RIPE's historical-query documentation says an operational object's visible history reaches back to its most recent creation or recreation. Delete and recreate an object, and the earlier run is outside that available window. The same guide says historical email attributes are filtered and histories of person and role objects cannot be queried. A tidy comparison may be accurate for the pages it shows while the older chapter has already fallen out of the binding.
Time deserves its own label. RIPE says the revision list uses UTC timestamps generated when the database server processed an update. That fixes when the registry accepted a version. The diff identifies changed text. To establish who requested the change, who authorized it, or what the network actually did afterward, an investigator needs another record. A database diff is a witness to its own pages, not an eyewitness to the meeting that produced them.
The immediate habit is simple: open the query page, compare the relevant revisions, note the UTC times and save the exact object key. If the object's creation boundary or filtered field matters to the dispute, write that limit beside the screenshot. The new view is most valuable when it makes both the edit and the edge of the evidence visible.
