Summary
- ARIN's Routing Security Update for ARIN 58 shows 3,389 ASPA objects across five RIR repositories: RIPE NCC 2,081, ARIN 685, APNIC 471, LACNIC 152 and AFRINIC zero.
- ARIN expects all five RIRs to support ASPA creation by the end of 2026. Its chart counts signed objects; using them to check BGP paths is a further operational step.
The final bar in ARIN's routing-security deck is an honest little square with a zero on it. RIPE NCC has 2,081 ASPA objects in the presentation's five-RIR tally; ARIN has 685, APNIC 471, LACNIC 152 and AFRINIC none. The four nonzero bars add to the stated total of 3,389. ARIN also predicts that every RIR will support ASPA creation by year-end. That forecast now has a scoreboard beside it.
An ASPA is an ASN holder's signed declaration of which other ASNs may act as its upstream providers. ARIN's own service guide gives the holder a way to create, inspect and change that provider set. RIPE NCC's guide explains the second half: validators must collect the signed objects and routers must check AS paths against them. A record in a repository is the opening move. A network filtering an implausible path is the point of the game.
The chart counts records, not percentages of eligible networks. One ASN can have one ASPA object containing several providers, and the slide gives no regional denominator or date specific to this chart. AFRINIC's zero is a count of objects in ARIN's snapshot; it says nothing by itself about whether an interface exists or when a first holder might publish. The raw imbalance is still striking: one registry's repository holds well over half the objects ARIN counted.
The governance question is where the promises become observable. A creation button can ship, a holder can sign, a validator can ingest, and a router can enforce; each handoff has a separate owner. ARIN has shown the first handoff across five regions. It has given the others a deadline to show up in the evidence.
