Summary
- APNIC’s official result records 366 votes in a one-seat, first-past-the-post election; it publishes no breakdown by eligibility route.
- A vote could come from an eligible member organization or a qualifying in-person APNIC 62 attendee. The public rules do not show that these groups were mutually exclusive.
Global IP number-resource policy depends on coordination among the five regional internet registries. Through its Address Supporting Organization Address Council role, the NRO Number Council advises the ICANN Board on that shared policy framework. APNIC’s 2026 election reports one winner and 366 votes, but does not split ballots between member-organization and conference-attendee eligibility routes. That gap matters to readers seeking to understand who participated in a vote for a policy-advisory seat; it does not itself indicate a flawed election.
The vote closed at 19:00 AEST on 10 September. Gazi Zehadul Kabir received 263 votes, Nicole T. I Chan 91 and Param Vijay 12. APNIC announced Kabir’s two-year term from 1 January 2027.
Each APNIC member organization could cast one ballot through its Corporate Contact or another contact with voting rights. A non-member individual could also vote if registered for APNIC 62, present in person and checked in by the deadline, and registered for and attended at least one of the previous eight APNIC or APRICOT conferences, online or in person. APNIC says it can verify eligibility against its records.
The public rules do not establish that these routes formed mutually exclusive groups. A member contact might also satisfy the attendee conditions; the sources do not say whether this happened. Nor does the result divide the 366 votes by route. Calling them “member votes” or “community votes” would add information the record does not contain.
The single seat was decided by first-past-the-post. The count identifies the winner among ballots recorded, but gives no denominator of eligible organizations or people, no abstention count and no voter composition. APNIC’s report separately lists preliminary conference figures—500 in-person attendees, 84 online-only participants and 169 represented member organizations. These are not the election’s eligible-voter denominator: the attendee route depends on prior conference participation, while the member route depends on organizational and contact status.
The seat is on the NRO NC, which also performs the ICANN Address Supporting Organization Address Council role. That remit includes global policy coordination and recommendations concerning ICANN’s number-resource responsibilities. It does not mean the seat runs APNIC’s regional registry or independently adopts global policy.
