Summary
- AFRINIC, ISPA and ZANOG plan an in-person Deployathon in Sandton, Johannesburg, from 20 to 22 October 2026.
- ICANN’s event listing says INX-ZA is offering travel and accommodation support for five fellows, or ZAR 50,000 in total. It says there is no per diem.
- The published application deadline was 12 October. The listing does not name recipients or confirm that the event has taken place; it is still prospective as of 16 October.
A separate South African edition
The Johannesburg event is a distinct stop in AFRINIC’s October programme. AFRINIC Academy’s events page lists a Botswana Deployathon for 6–9 October and a South African edition for 20–22 October; the ICANN entry names ISPA and ZANOG as partners for the latter. Qualified engineers based in Johannesburg or able to travel there are eligible under the listing. Its “open event” label and registration button sit alongside an application deadline that has passed. The public pages do not say whether late applications are being accepted.
Travel is the funded cost
The support offer is unusually concrete. INX-ZA says it will cover travel and accommodation for five fellows, or a total of ZAR 50,000. It may cover additional ground travel to an airport if disclosed and agreed in advance, and it allows driving or taxi costs when there is no air journey. INX-ZA reserves the right to validate travel plans. The listing rules out a per diem.
The page does not state how the total is divided, whether every fellow receives the same amount, who was selected, or how many applicants sought support. Five funded fellows should not be mistaken for the event’s total attendance. Nor does a posted budget establish that the support has already been awarded or spent.
The work still needs a result record
AFRINIC Academy describes its Deployathon model as direct assistance for operational engineers working on real network configurations. That is useful context for the event’s purpose, but the Johannesburg listing does not publish a detailed agenda, an attendee list or an outcome measure. The event is scheduled, not reported as complete.
The application deadline is already past. The next public evidence should show whether the event ran, how many engineers attended, whether travel support reached people from outside Sandton, and what deployment work participants completed. A configuration milestone, a route announcement and sustained IPv6 user traffic are different forms of evidence; the event page does not claim any of them in advance.
