- Google has announced plans to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) technology into its Chrome browser, with the aim of enhancing user experience.
- The new features include intelligent tab organization, customizable themes, and AI-based writing assistance.
Chrome browser is one of the most popular browsers worldwide, and Google is planning to enhance its user experience further by utilizing artificial intelligence technology. The company recently announced the launch of three new AI features, including intelligent tab organization, customizable themes, and AI-based writing assistance, which will soon be rolled out on the Mac and Windows versions of Chrome.
Intelligent tab organization:
Chrome’s intelligent tab organization feature aims to help users better manage multiple open tabs. Users often need to manually organize their tabs, which can be a tedious process. With the new tab manager, Chrome will automatically suggest and create tab groups based on the tabs users have open. Users simply need to right-click on a tab and select “Group similar tabs” to utilize this feature. Chrome will also provide suggested names and emojis for the created tab groups, making them easier to find. This feature is designed to assist users in tasks that require simultaneous opening of multiple tabs, such as online shopping, research, travel planning, etc.
Customizable themes:
Google recently introduced a new AI-based wallpaper experience on Android 14 and Pixel devices, leveraging the same text-to-image deep learning model to allow users to generate custom themes for the Chrome browser. This feature enables users to select new themes by opening the “Customize Chrome” sidebar, clicking on “Change theme,” and choosing the option of “Generate with AI.” Themes can be generated based on topics, moods, visual styles, and colors. Previously, Chrome offered a variety of color-rich yet minimalist themes and artist-created themes. However, this new feature allows users to expand the built-in options and create themes that suit the current ambiance.

AI-Based writing assistance:
The AI-based writing assistance feature being developed by Google is similar to its experimental AI-powered search experience SGE (Search Generation Experience) and aims to help users draft content in different tones (e.g., formal or casual) and lengths. Through the built-in writing assistant in Chrome, Google suggests that users can write business reviews, formulate friendly party replies, or make formal inquiries about vacation rentals. This feature is currently in the experimental stage, and users can access it by right-clicking on a text box or field on a webpage and selecting “Help me write.” Users simply need to input a few words, and Google’s AI will provide assistance suggestions.
These new features complement Chrome’s existing AI and machine learning (ML) tools, such as captioning for audio and video, protection against malicious websites on Android through Chrome’s safe browsing feature, mute permission prompts, and summarizing web pages with the “SGE while browsing” feature. Google has stated that it will continue introducing AI and ML updates to Chrome in the coming year, including integration with the new Gemini AI model to help simplify web browsing.
