UK data center operators are reporting that energy supply has become the primary constraint on AI expansion, overtaking compute shortages. This shift highlights a structural change in the AI economy, where physical infrastructure—especially power—has taken precedence over hardware and software limitations.

  • Ofgem says about 140 proposed data centres seek as much as 50 GW of grid connections in Great Britain.
  • The 50 GW is the sum of applications, some potentially speculative; it is not capacity already built or a forecast of actual consumption.

A queue larger than current peak demand

The Guardian reports that the applications total 50 GW, compared with current peak demand of roughly 45 GW in Great Britain. Ofgem recorded a surge in applications from November 2024 to June 2025. The comparison shows pressure on the connection process, but it does not mean every proposed facility will be built or draw power at the same time.

The geography matters: Ofgem's comparison is for Great Britain's electricity system, not the whole United Kingdom including Northern Ireland. WIRED separately reports that National Grid, the transmission operator in England and Wales, has more than 30 GW of proposed data centres waiting to connect, equivalent to about two-thirds of Great Britain's peak demand.

The bottleneck is moving electricity to the site

The constraint is not simply how much electricity is generated over a year. Power must reach the right substations through lines and protection systems capable of serving a concentrated load. WIRED says new transmission infrastructure can take seven to 14 years once planning, objections, equipment, labour and construction are included.

National Grid is therefore testing dynamic line ratings, routing around congestion, onsite batteries and flexible connections that reduce demand during stressed periods. These measures can release headroom, but they cannot replace every new line. Current rules also prevent the operator from fully counting a data centre's promised flexibility when planning its connection.

Filtering projects by maturity

Ofgem is considering financial tests, deposits or non-refundable fees to deter applications without credible funding. It is also exploring whether developers should pay for or build parts of their grid access. Those measures could change queue order and project costs, but they do not create transmission capacity by themselves.

The useful watchpoints are firm connection dates, final investment decisions, planning approvals, construction contracts and power agreements. Workload type matters too: flexible training, always-on inference and critical services cannot all be shifted or curtailed in the same way.

Electricity is becoming a site and schedule constraint as important as chips, but compute has not stopped being scarce. Britain's question is which projects are deliverable, where the grid can host them and who pays for extra capacity without delaying other connections.
