- EE has launched Fast Lane, a commercial 5G network-slicing feature for eligible consumer and small-business plans
- The service gives eligible connections priority during congestion but does not guarantee a particular speed or level of performance
The fact
EE has launched Fast Lane, a paid network-slicing feature for customers on its standalone 5G network, which it markets as 5G+. The service is included with the new Full Works Plus handset plan, priced £5 a month above Full Works. It is also available to new and re-signing small-business customers on eligible Full Works plans.
Fast Lane is designed for busy parts of the network. When congestion builds, EE gives eligible connections priority over ordinary traffic. Customers need a compatible handset and SIM, an eligible plan and 5G+ coverage. EE does not promise a minimum speed or guaranteed level of performance.
The launch takes network slicing beyond the demonstrations EE has run at major events. Those trials included Wembley Stadium, Belfast Christmas Market, SailGP in Portsmouth, the BAFTAs and the Royal Welsh Show. EE says its 5G+ network now covers about 54 million people, equivalent to 78% of the UK population.
The assessment
EE is now asking customers to pay for something it had previously demonstrated mainly at events: a better place in the queue when its 5G+ network gets crowded. That is not the same as selling a faster connection. Fast Lane does not raise speeds everywhere, and EE does not promise a minimum level of performance. It changes how eligible traffic is treated when congestion appears.
That means some customers may notice little difference most of the time and more of one when the network is heavily loaded. For BTW readers, the important question is whether that occasional advantage is useful enough to justify the extra charge. If it is, EE has a practical way to make money from standalone 5G slicing without reserving the technology for specialist business services.
What to Watch
Watch whether EE publishes Fast Lane take-up, extends it beyond Full Works plans or introduces slices for particular applications. Independent measurements during heavily congested events would show how much difference priority treatment makes, while further 5G+ coverage will determine how widely customers can use the service they are paying for.
