Contextual AI, a startup focused on improving the performance of artificial intelligence models, has raised $80M through a Series A funding round. The Mountain View, California-based company, which declined to disclose its post-money valuation, is estimated by data provider PitchBook to be worth around $609M. The funding round was led by venture capital firm Greycroft and included contributions from existing investors such as Bain Capital Ventures and Lightspeed, who had previously invested $20M to help launch the company in 2023.

Douwe Kiela, CEO of Contextual AI and a former team leader at Meta has been instrumental in developing RAG. This technique enhances AI model accuracy by providing curated information, thereby reducing errors and hallucinations. The newly raised funds will be used to bring Contextual AI’s product to market, with initial collaborations already underway with major companies in the finance, technology, and media sectors, including HSBC and Qualcomm.
