• Community Fibre has installed its first 8.5Gbps residential broadband connections in London
  • The new tier raises its fastest available home broadband speed by 70%, from 5Gbps

The fact

Community Fibre has installed what it says are London's first 8.5Gbps residential broadband connections, raising its fastest home service from 5Gbps. The new tier increases the operator's maximum residential speed by 70%.

An 8.5Gbps line does not mean every device in a home will receive that speed. Routers, wired interfaces, Wi-Fi equipment and the services customers connect to can all become bottlenecks. Community Fibre has not disclosed pricing, the initial availability footprint or customer take-up.

The assessment

Community Fibre is not really selling 8.5Gbps as a necessity. It is showing how far it can push the fibre already in the ground. The bigger constraint is inside the home: unless customers have routers, wired ports and devices built for multi-gigabit speeds, much of that extra capacity will never reach them.

For BTW readers, the interesting question is whether this becomes a real product rather than a headline speed. If Community Fibre widens availability and customers actually move onto the tier, the upgrade has commercial value. If take-up stays small, 8.5Gbps will say more about what the network can do than what households are willing to buy.

What to watch

Watch for pricing, wider availability and customer take-up. Router specifications and real-world performance will also show how much of the 8.5Gbps access speed reaches devices inside the home.
