What happened: Cisco unveils AI Defence to secure enterprise AI adoption

Cisco has introduced AI Defence, an innovative solution designed to protect enterprises in their AI transformation journey. The announcement was made on 15 January 2025 in San Jose, California. AI Defence focuses on addressing unique security challenges posed by AI applications, including data leakage, model vulnerabilities, and unauthorised AI tool usage.

The solution includes advanced features such as runtime security, model validation, and access control to mitigate risks throughout the AI lifecycle. Built into Cisco’s Security Cloud platform, it leverages proprietary machine learning models and the company’s extensive threat intelligence network, Cisco Talos, to detect and counter emerging threats in real time. AI Defence is set to be available in March 2025, offering organisations the tools to develop and deploy AI applications securely while ensuring compliance and safeguarding sensitive data.

Why it’s important

As enterprises increasingly adopt AI technology, the associated security risks have grown in complexity and scope. Traditional cybersecurity tools often fall short of addressing the unique vulnerabilities posed by AI, such as multi-model applications and the potential misuse of proprietary data. Cisco’s AI Defence introduces an end-to-end approach, integrating visibility, access control, and threat protection into one unified solution.

According to the Cisco 2024 AI Readiness Index, only 29% of surveyed organisations feel equipped to handle AI-related security risks. This underscores the need for robust, enterprise-wide solutions like AI Defence to ensure safe and effective AI adoption. By providing a standardised security framework for developers and users, Cisco aims to empower organisations to advance their AI initiatives confidently, enhancing both productivity and innovation.
