Then the service supplier asks three questions the spreadsheet does not answer: what model is installed, which service or mobile arrangement carries the signal, and who has confirmed a compatible replacement and test?

That distinction matters during the 2G switch-off. Government guidance says operators will turn off 2G between 2029 and 2033 and that all 2G-only devices need upgrading to 4G and/or 5G capable devices to maintain connectivity. It names medical pendants, lift alarms and fire alarms as examples of equipment that can rely on 2G. The direction is practical: check with the service provider that it works with 4G or 5G; if it does not, upgrade it.

Those facts do not establish that a particular device is 2G-only. Nor does a “4G” product label prove the end-to-end service path at a specific site. A device may use a managed service, a SIM selected by a supplier, a monitoring contract or a replacement programme with its own dependencies. The necessary local question is therefore bounded: has the responsible supplier confirmed the installed equipment and its continuing service path, and has the relevant function been tested under the replacement arrangement?

Use an asset transition record rather than a single red/amber/green column. For each possible dependency, record the function, location, installed model where known, evidence of 2G reliance, named service supplier, contact status, compatible-replacement confirmation, replacement owner, implementation state, test evidence and unresolved risk. Keep unknown as unknown. A count of devices is useful for scope; it is not a safety conclusion.

The government’s telecommunications-modernisation collection also describes the move from older mobile generations to 4G and 5G. Neither document turns a local inventory into proof of continuity. The accountable close is a confirmed replacement path for the particular function.
