What happened: Vodafone unveils broadband battery backup for emergencies
Vodafone, in collaboration with BT, KCOM, and Zen Internet, has launched a broadband battery backup device to keep users connected during power outages. The compact and lightweight device provides up to four to seven hours of uninterrupted connectivity, automatically switching from mains to battery power when needed.
Developed in partnership with Wire Technologies, the device will be distributed free of charge to landline-dependent customers and will be available for purchase at £150 for others. Vodafone’s initiative complies with Ofcom’s regulations, which require telcos to ensure at least one hour of connectivity for landline-dependent users during power cuts. The device also aligns with the UK government’s PSTN migration strategy, which will phase out traditional landlines by 2027.

Why it’s important
The broadband battery backup device plays a crucial role in maintaining communication for landline-dependent users, particularly for emergency services, medical assistance, and support networks. Its seamless operation and extended battery life provide peace of mind, ensuring connectivity even during prolonged outages.
Vodafone is also offering the device wholesale to other telcos, reinforcing a collective industry approach to safeguarding connectivity. The initiative reflects a growing emphasis on network resilience, especially as the UK transitions to digital voice services.
