• The new design is Korea’s first-ever two-armed mobile robot, with seven degrees of freedom in each arm and six degrees of freedom in a single leg for flexible movement.
  • The robot uses a demonstration system to increase practicality, and it also has a self-collision prevention feature to ensure safety during training.

Rainbow Robotics of Korea has released details of its dual-arm mobile robot, the RB-Y1. The first of its kind in Korea, the robot features a wheeled dual-arm and single-leg design that adapts to a wide range of environments with high reliability and performance. The company has previously signed a memorandum of understanding with the Schaeffler Group and KETI to co-develop the RB-Y1 and other mobile robots, and executives expect the collaboration to advance the field and establish a global R&D model.

Details of the new robot

According to Rainbow Robotics, the RB-Y1 combines key elements from autonomous mobile robots and cooperative robots to provide a finished design with excellent performance and dependability.

The company has developed a bimanual mobile manipulator in line with generative AI, aiming to overcome limitations of existing industrial robots and be used in various industrial sites. The robot features a teaching system for usability, allowing users to train a robot arm by linking it to a data arm, and a self-collision prevention feature for safety during training sessions.

Co-operation for development

The development follows the company’s announcement that it has inked a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop RB-Y1 and other mobile manipulators in Korea with Schaeffler Group and the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI).

Schaeffler’s CTO Michael Pausch said the Korean robotics industry is working with Rainbow Robotics to drive technological advances. The agreement will make KETI’s technology available for the development of artificially intelligent mobile dual-arm robots that will improve efficiency and facilitate smart and sustainable production processes, said Shin Hee-Dong, president of KETI, adding that the partnership aims to create a successful global R&D model.
