- TELUS recorded a C$2.1 billion impairment against TELUS Digital and cut its 2026 revenue and EBITDA growth guidance
- The operator will retain more cash for debt reduction while reviewing parts of TELUS Health and refocusing on connectivity
The fact
TELUS cut its annual dividend by 55% to C$0.75 per share and lowered its 2026 outlook after second-quarter revenue and profit declined from a year earlier. The Canadian operator reduced its revenue-growth guidance by two percentage points and its adjusted EBITDA-growth guidance by six percentage points. Its shares fell about 11% following the announcement. Chief executive Victor Dodig said the cash retained through the lower dividend would support debt reduction and a greater focus on connectivity.
TELUS also recorded a C$2.1 billion impairment against TELUS Digital, its customer-experience and digital-services business. The company bought the remaining shares in TELUS Digital for US$539 million in October 2025. It is now reviewing possible transactions involving parts of TELUS Health and will provide a broader strategy update with its third-quarter results. TELUS will also place its consumer and business telecom operations under one executive from 1 September.
The assessment
Cutting the dividend gives TELUS more cash to reduce debt without relying entirely on operating cash flow or asset sales. The impairment does not affect cash, but it shows that TELUS Digital is now valued below the amount previously recorded. Management must weigh any further investment in the division against its stated debt-reduction priority.
A transaction involving TELUS Health could provide additional funds, but TELUS has not identified the assets under review or the structure of any deal. The proceeds, timing and continuing obligations therefore remain unknown. For BTW readers, TELUS has not yet said how it will divide the retained cash between debt reduction and fibre and mobile investment. Its third-quarter update should clarify whether network spending will be maintained as the company reduces debt.
What to watch
TELUS plans to provide a broader strategy update with its third-quarter results. Watch for debt targets, capital-spending plans, and details of any TELUS Health transaction. The figures should clarify how much cash management intends to direct towards debt repayment and how much remains available for fibre and mobile networks.
