• stc has ordered a dedicated Astranis satellite for Saudi Arabia, with launch planned as part of the company's Block 3 mission in 2026
  • stc will control the satellite's payload configuration and coverage, while enterprise service is expected to begin in 2027

The fact

Saudi telecom operator stc has agreed with Astranis to deploy a dedicated communications satellite for Saudi Arabia. The spacecraft is scheduled to launch with Astranis' Block 3 mission in 2026, with enterprise connectivity expected to become available in 2027.

Astranis says stc will control the satellite's payload configuration and coverage. The capacity is intended to work alongside stc's fibre network and other satellite services rather than replace them. Astranis describes the spacecraft as part of its MicroGEO platform, which uses smaller satellites in geostationary orbit to provide dedicated regional capacity. The companies have not disclosed the contract value, contracted throughput, ground-station design or a firm date for commercial service.

The assessment

stc is getting more control than it would have from simply buying capacity on a satellite shared with other customers. A dedicated payload lets the operator decide how coverage is configured for Saudi Arabia and then fit that capacity into services already running over its terrestrial and satellite networks.

The timetable also needs to be read in two parts. Launching the spacecraft in 2026 does not mean customers can use it immediately. Astranis still has to bring the satellite into its operating position and complete testing, while stc has to connect the new capacity into its own network before enterprise service can begin.

For BTW readers, the 2027 service launch will tell us much more than the rocket launch. Customers will need actual details on capacity, availability, and network integration before they can judge where the satellite fits alongside fibre and other connectivity options.

What to watch

Watch the Block 3 launch, in-orbit commissioning, and stc's first commercial service details. Disclosures on coverage, throughput and ground infrastructure should show how the satellite will connect with stc's wider network and which enterprise customers are likely to use it first.
