OUR TAKE

What happened

SoftBank has shelved plans for producing an AI chip with Intel, according to the FT, citing people familiar with the matter. The partnership failed after Intel reportedly struggled to match SoftBank’s requirements for speed and volume, as the Japanese firm looks to compete with Nvidia. The company is now refocusing its discussions with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). SoftBank is accelerating efforts to combine Arm’s chip designs with its most recent AI semiconductor acquisition Graphcore.

SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son has already pledged to spend billions to push the company into the heart of AI development. According to the report, the discussions with Intel failed in recent months, before the US chip maker announced big cost cuts and job losses in early August. The sources suggested that given the small number of large chip manufacturers globally, talks could restart, presumably if TSMC discussions falter. The Taiwanese chip maker is already struggling to meet demand from existing customers.

Why it’s important

The partnership collapsed after Intel struggled to meet SoftBank’s demands for speed and volume. The industry’s transition in a new direction presents both opportunities and challenges for the company. SoftBank is shifting to become an AI-centric company, largely through the vision of its CEO, who has pledged billions of dollars to push the company into the heart of AI development. The company reportedly plans to build data centres equipped with homegrown chips in the US, Europe, Asia and the Middle East as early as 2026.

It also injects new impetus into economic development, promotes industrial upgrading and economic structure optimisation, and increases overall economic vitality. Not only SoftBank, but also other enterprises should consider more possibilities to better participate in international competition and cooperation and to meet the challenges and opportunities brought by the globalisation.
