What happened: Schneider Electric unveils liquid cooling for AI and HPC

Schneider Electric has launched a new liquid cooling portfolio, developed in partnership with Motivair, aimed at high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) workloads. This marks the first major showcase of the company’s complete liquid cooling technology portfolio, following its acquisition of Motivair earlier this year.

The new portfolio, designed for hyperscale, colocation, and high-density data centre environments, promises to meet the growing demands of AI and HPC, which require both speed and energy efficiency. Schneider Electric’s Vice President of Cloud and Service Providers for EMEA, Thierry Chamayou, detailed the significance of this new offering during a recent conversation with Capacity.

Schneider Electric’s approach combines its long-standing expertise in power management with Motivair’s advanced liquid cooling technologies. The new solutions include Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs), ChilledDoor rear-door heat exchangers, and Dynamic Cold Plates, all tailored to improve energy efficiency, enhance performance, and reduce downtime.

Why it’s important

The European data centre market is rapidly evolving, driven by AI and the increasing density of data centre racks. Traditionally dominated by markets like London, Paris, and Amsterdam (FLAP-D), the sector is seeing a shift towards newer regions, particularly the Nordics. According to Chamayou, the region offers faster grid connections, a stable renewable energy supply, and a climate well-suited for cooling – making it an attractive investment for data centre players.

For companies in the AI space, the need for efficient liquid cooling solutions has never been more urgent. Chamayou stressed that as AI workloads become more intensive, traditional air cooling methods are no longer sufficient. The liquid cooling systems Schneider Electric has introduced will address these high-density demands while ensuring energy efficiency and operational continuity.

Schneider Electric’s acquisition of Motivair accelerates its liquid cooling capabilities, allowing the company to deliver solutions faster. It also positions Schneider Electric as a key player in the next phase of data centre evolution, where cooling is integral to the performance and sustainability of AI-driven applications.
