What happened

With the ongoing staff strike, Samsung Electronics revealed its latest foldable smartphones on Wednesday, positioning its flagship models as lighter and slimmer with enhanced AI functions, directly challenging Apple’s dominance in the premium market. Alongside the phones, Samsung introduced advanced health monitoring features in its new smartwatch and a cutting-edge health monitoring ring.

Samsung, the world’s largest smartphone maker first rolled out the foldable segment in 2019. The performance seems not optimistic as its share in the foldable phone market plummeted from 81% in 2022 to 63% in 2023. To counter this, Samsung’s new products boast a longer battery life, higher resolution camera, and improved cooling. They also enhanced AI features including a “listening mode” for simultaneous interpretation when paired with Galaxy Buds and AI search functions developed with Google.

Health monitoring advancements are a significant focus, with the Galaxy Watch products featuring new sensors and a 3-nanometre chip, tripling application processing efficiency. The introduction of the Galaxy Ring, priced at $399, marks Samsung’s most ambitious health accessory which continuously monitors heart rate and stress levels.

Why it’s important

Jack Leathem, a researcher at Canalys, said, “Bringing AI-powered health and fitness features to wearables will be important to differentiate” Samsung from other smartwatch vendors, and is “core to attracting brand switchers in the premium segment.”
