•  Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, has expressed its intention to assemble a team to counter AI ‘fraud’ in upcoming elections.
  • Ongoing efforts to curb the dissemination of AI errors require continued attention, urging society as a whole to collaborate in addressing this issue.

According to sources, AI-generated content has the potential to influence political elections. Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, is forming a team to detect deceptive AI content, including videos and images, ahead of the upcoming EU elections in six months.

Preserving Authenticity in EU Election Information

Meta aims to create a team dedicated to removing deceptive AI messages, particularly with regards to controlling their impact on the EU elections. In response to Meta’s initiative, TikTok announced in February the launch of an ‘Election Centre’ in the app for each of the 27 EU members, providing authoritative information. Marco Pancini also declared plans to enhance identification of potential threats on ‘WhatsApp’ and ‘Tweets,’ with commentators and content censors established in these apps. Security investments have been expanded to protect the election.

Efficient protection

Deepak Padmanabhan from Queen’s University Belfast points out potential flaws in their approach. Questions arise about how these companies will handle AI-generated images. He believes there are limitations in Meta’s strategy, emphasizing that these companies mainly focus on exposing misinformation rather than dealing with content restraining votes. The collaboration on effectively exposing fake messages remains a complex puzzle. While the union of these companies is a crucial step in the fight.
