What happened: OpenAI and Nvidia plan multi-billion dollar UK data centre investments

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang are scheduled to visit the UK next week. During their visit, they are expected to announce significant investments in UK data centres, totalling billions of dollars, aimed at advancing generative AI. The companies will collaborate with Nscale Global Holdings Ltd., a London-based data centre firm, to implement the project.

Nscale, which launched in May 2024, has already pledged $2.5 billion to the UK data centre sector over three years, including a site in Loughton, Essex. That facility could accommodate up to 45,000 of Nvidia’s GB200 superchips, specifically designed for AI workloads.

Other US companies, including CoreWeave, are also expected to announce UK investments during the same period. OpenAI and Nvidia spokespeople, as well as Nscale representatives, declined to comment.

Why it’s important

This move signals OpenAI and Nvidia’s deeper commitment to the UK market, especially in the AI sector. The UK government has previously outlined plans to “turbocharge AI,” including investment in data centres and chip production, and creating AI growth zones with streamlined planning and grid access.

The partnership could have broader implications for AI infrastructure across Europe. As AI adoption grows, the development of data centres capable of supporting large-scale model training and inference becomes increasingly critical. These investments aim to strengthen the UK’s digital infrastructure and position it as a hub for AI innovation.
