- OpenAI releases ChatGPT Edu, a new version of ChatGPT particularly created for universities. It is said to perform better than its previous versions at interpreting text, coding, and mathematics.
- It was launched in the context that the ChatGPT is widely used in universities, including Wharton, Arizona State University and Columbia, for academic purposes.
On Thursday, OpenAI announced ChatGPT Edu, a version of ChatGPT particularly built for students, academics, faculty. And it is believed to have better performance than its previous counterparts at interpreting text, coding, and mathematics.
Functions of ChatGPT Edu
Having access to GPT-4o, OpenAI’s latest large language model that the company revealed earlier this month, ChatGPT Edu is claimed to excel at its previous versions at interpreting text, coding, and mathematics, analysing data sets, and being able to access the web. Furthermore, it will also have drastically higher message limits than the free version of ChatGPT and allow universities to build custom versions of ChatGPT trained on their own data, which will not be among the data used to train OpenAI’s models, according to the company.

Background of the launch
While the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 initially sparked debate over academic integrity and potential misuse in educational environments, universities have growingly been using the AI for both teaching and research. Considering a number of prestigious universities, including Wharton, Arizona State University and Columbia, use ChatGPT Enterprise, OpenAI decides to design the latest version.
For example, MBA undergrads at Wharton, completed their final reflection assignments by training a GPT trained on course materials have having discussions with the chatbot, whereas Arizona State University is experimenting with its own GPTs that engage German conversations with students learning the language.
