Nvidia and PT Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison plan to invest $200 million in an AI center in Central Java, Indonesia. The center, slated for completion by 2024, will likely focus on telecom infrastructure and HR development. Surakarta’s Mayor and President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka supports the initiative, citing the city’s readiness and 5G infrastructure.

Investment in AI center
On 4th April in Jakarta, it was announced that Nvidia and Indonesian telecommunications company PT Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison are set to construct an artificial intelligence centre in Central Java by 2024, with a value of $200 million, according to the communication minister.
Budi Arie Setiadi stated in a press release that the AI centre may include telecommunication infrastructure or a human resources hub, and will be situated in the city of Surakarta.
Selection of Surakarta
The CEO of Indosat has already shared details of the investment plan with Surakarta’s mayor, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who is also the President-elect of Indonesia and son of the current President, Joko Widodo.
The decision to choose Surakarta was based on the city’s readiness, skilled workforce, and 5G infrastructure, according to the mayor.
Indosat’s AI leadership
Indosat is dedicated to becoming a leader in AI development in Indonesia, as stated by the company’s spokesperson, Steve Saerang, in a press release on Friday.
“At the moment, our primary goal is to develop an AI centre of excellence in Surakarta,” he said, and added that this collaboration will boost the growth of technology infrastructure in the country.Nvidia has not yet commented on the matter.
