iSelect's Home Security Index, published in 2026, ranks Norway as the safest country for home security out of 32 nations, driven by low crime rates and high digital readiness. The UK places seventh, highlighting areas for improvement in physical and digital security.

What the ranking actually measures

Australian insurance-comparison service iSelect published Most Security Conscious Countries in February 2026. It selected 32 countries according to data availability and produced a score out of 100 from two categories. “Security consciousness” carries 60% of the total and combines reported robbery rates per 100,000 people with Google search activity for home-security measures per 100,000. “Home security infrastructure” carries 40% and combines household disposable income with the share of households that have internet access.

Every input is normalised before the two weighted category scores are combined. iSelect says the data were accurate as of 9 January 2026. Its interpretation is that lower robbery, more security-related searches, higher income and wider internet access indicate greater awareness and readiness to adopt security technology. That is a defensible editorial hypothesis, but it is not an observed measure of household protection.

Why Norway and the UK placed where they did

Norway's overall score was 87.39, ahead of Finland at 82.48 and New Zealand at 80.08. iSelect lists 15 robberies per 100,000 people, 2,236 relevant searches per 100,000 and internet access in 99% of households for Norway. The ranking therefore rewards a combination of low reported robbery, unusually strong search interest and very broad connectivity.

The UK scored 73.08, just 0.03 points behind the Netherlands at 73.11. Its security-consciousness subscore was 63.09, compared with 60.49 for the Netherlands. iSelect lists 120 robberies and 974 searches per 100,000 people, household disposable income of $48,166 and household internet access of 96.4%. The narrow final gap shows how the weighting can reverse positions across different inputs; “seventh” is not a standalone national risk grade.

Three distinctions the headline must preserve

First, robbery is not burglary. Robbery generally involves taking property from a person through force or threat, whereas burglary concerns unlawful entry. The Office for National Statistics burglary dataset separately measures incidents through the Crime Survey for England and Wales. A cross-country robbery input cannot establish the relative prevalence of home break-ins.

Second, search volume is interest, not adoption. Queries about cameras, alarms or locks may reflect prevention, recent incidents, media attention or shopping research. The index does not count installed devices, paid monitoring, patch status, default passwords, response times or insurance coverage. Third, internet access and income indicate possible purchasing and connectivity capacity; neither establishes that a connected product is deployed securely. The ITU series defines household internet access, while the OECD definition treats disposable income as the resources available for consumption or saving.

Evidence quality and commercial context

iSelect identifies its upstream sources: World Population Review and The Global Economy for robbery, DataForSEO for search activity, World Population Review for population, Wikipedia for disposable income and the ITU for household internet access. Those choices mix official statistics, aggregators, search-market data and a secondary income compilation. The published page provides scores and methodology, but not a fully reproducible country-by-country calculation file.

Independent reporting by SecurityBrief Australia confirms the published ordering and scores, but it does not independently reconstruct the calculations. National sources also use their own classifications and reporting systems: Statistics Norway, for example, documents police-reported offences and warns through its definitions that coverage and classification matter. Cross-country comparisons should therefore be read with data-vintage and comparability caveats.

iSelect is an insurance-comparison business and discloses that it may receive commission and does not compare every provider or policy. That does not invalidate the arithmetic, but it makes the ranking a commercial research product rather than an official public-safety assessment.

Why the corrected interpretation matters

The useful signal is not that one country has “won” home security. It is that a selected group of countries combines different levels of reported robbery, public interest, household resources and connectivity. For insurers, policymakers and security vendors, the index can frame questions about consumer awareness and access. It cannot justify claims about cyber resilience, smart-home adoption or the effectiveness of a national security ecosystem.

Future updates should be tested against changes in country selection, metric definitions, search queries, source years, normalisation and the 60/40 weights. A stronger assessment would pair the composite with comparable burglary or victimisation surveys, installed-system and monitoring data, product-security evidence and transparent raw calculations. Until then, Norway's first place and the UK's seventh are positions within iSelect's stated model—not direct rankings of household safety.
