What happened

Telecom operators and i2CAT have launched a Spanish network API lab to speed up the adoption of open, interoperable APIs. The lab will focus on creating use cases, testing APIs, and deploying testbeds to ensure cross-network functionality. Researchers will also access advanced tools, support, and a multi-operator test environment.

This effort aligns with the GSMA’s Open Gateway project, which integrates network functions into apps to generate revenue. “This collaboration will boost multi-operator cooperation, a core part of Open Gateway,” said Irene Bernal, Telefónica Open Gateway’s director of product and strategy.

Additionally, new APIs will follow the CAMARA framework to ensure compatibility. Victor del Pozo of MasOrange called Open Gateway a “paradigm shift” in how telecom services are designed and marketed.

Why it is important

The Spanish network API lab is a key step in advancing open and interoperable APIs for the telecom industry. As digital transformation grows, APIs are crucial for connecting networks and applications seamlessly. This initiative, part of the GSMA’s Open Gateway project, aims to boost collaboration and unlock new revenue opportunities for operators.

Moreover, the lab ensures APIs are compatible across networks by adhering to the CAMARA framework. This is essential for widespread adoption and innovation. Victor del Pozo of MasOrange called Open Gateway a “paradigm shift,” showing its potential to transform how telecom services are created and sold.

At the same time, companies like Nokia are investing heavily in the API ecosystem, highlighting its importance to the industry’s future. By enabling faster deployment and multi-operator collaboration, the lab drives innovation and efficiency, offering businesses and developers exciting new opportunities.
