Buying a backup route for a live feed is usually a procurement job as well as an engineering one: someone must arrange it, configure it and watch it. NetActuate is offering to take that second internal path off the broadcaster's task list. The important question is how much of the journey moves with the job.

Its 8 September launch announcement describes Media Substrate as available in the customer portal. A 4 September preview had already set out the idea. The broadcaster supplies an encoder and a familiar protocol, sends one stream into the service and receives one stream at the other end. NetActuate says it runs diverse paths underneath, merges them at egress and measures latency and continuity along the way.

The operator reports a blackout test in which one path was taken down without loss at the merged output. That is a supplier-reported result within a stated test, not independent proof that every production feed survives every fault. Neither two paths nor one successful test establishes that all physical facilities and failure points are independent.

The part outside the protection

NetActuate's own explanation draws a useful boundary. Its measurements run from ingress to egress across its network. The customer's last mile at either end, and the protective buffer added by a transport protocol, are separate. A good transit figure is therefore not the same as the time between capturing an event and showing it to a viewer.

The company offers five ways into the service: public internet access, dedicated circuits, an operator-managed last mile, a low-Earth-orbit satellite link paired with a fixed line, and optional diverse dual feeds at ingress and egress. The last option is described as a premium layer above the already redundant internal transport. It would be a mistake to infer that every standard purchase already includes two independent connections from the broadcaster's facility.

This distinction makes an evaluation more concrete. Interrupting an internal path tests something different from losing a venue's access connection. An acceptance exercise should identify which segment has failed, where loss is measured and which buffers are holding the output. Those are proposed evaluation questions, not results of testing performed for this article.

An operating service, with a deployment choice

Managed Media Substrate uses the existing footprint; Custom is a dedicated deployment with customer-specific network identity, address space and geographic scope. The advertised catalogue of more than 45 locations is a set from which deployments can be drawn, not a promise that every customer's feed traverses an automatically active worldwide network.

The product page says there is no separate platform charge. Usage is metered by tenant and flow, with egress and other usage billed separately; Custom is quoted per deployment. Thus the second internal path is incorporated into the service model, not evidence that all access, traffic or optional protection costs disappear.

NetActuate says it operates the ASN and BGP control plane used to steer the paths. Customers retain their encoders and workflow. This is a sale of network operations beneath the video application, rather than a replacement for the whole broadcast chain.
