About MTN Sudan
MTN launched in Sudan in September 2005. The company, through its legal entity Bashair Telecom, secured the second GSM licence in Sudan in September 2004. MTN Sudan’s distributors operate over 8,500 points of sale across the country and have a subscriber base of 3 million.
Sudan’s national information and telecommunications strategy is a key component of its broader development strategy. The country has enacted laws that regulate all aspects of the telecommunications sector. This sector is overseen by the National Telecommunications Company (NTC), which was established by the national telecommunications bill in 1996.
The telecommunications sector is nearly fully liberalised, with government ownership restricted to 20 per cent of Sudatel, the second-largest operator. There is no national policy for universal coverage and affordability in telecommunications. However, the NTC, in collaboration with operators, has established a “National Telecommunications Support Fund.” This fund provides assistance to individuals for establishing and running commercial universal telecommunications service centres, supports schools and universities in acquiring computers and Internet connectivity, and helps low-income families obtain computers.
