The fact

Master Power Technologies (MPT) is using its R50 million Customer Experience Centre in Midrand, South Africa, to test data-centre infrastructure before installation. Opened in June, the 6,000m² facility also serves as MPT's regional headquarters and includes a 2MVA UPS test platform and a 400kW cooling test centre. It supports testing and training across power, cooling, monitoring and management systems.

MPT operates across more than 20 African and Middle Eastern markets and says it has completed more than 150 data-centre projects. Rory Reid, head of its data-centres department, told Capacity that projects across Africa face different power supplies, climates, regulatory requirements, financing structures and skills availability. MPT uses modular, prefabricated and purpose-built designs, and says customers can also use existing sites or smaller modular facilities while permanent power for new developments is being secured.

The assessment

MPT's Midrand centre gives customers a chance to test power, cooling and monitoring systems before the equipment reaches the site. If a configuration does not behave as expected, engineers still have room to change the design or specifications before installation makes those changes more difficult.

That window can be particularly useful across African markets, where operating conditions vary widely. A facility dealing with unreliable grid supply, high temperatures or limited water availability may need a different approach from one built around more stable utilities. Testing in Midrand will not reproduce every condition at the final site, but it gives project teams an earlier opportunity to see how systems work together and where problems may appear.
